My new fave show

Posted by Leslie on January 14th, 2008 | 2 Comments

I’m not a big TV watcher. Partly because I don’t really have the time to spend and partly because I don’t want to be bothered by what’s on. But lately, I’ve been fascinated by Animal Planet’s new show: Orangutan Island. This is a protected island of young orangutans who have been orphaned and abandoned and are learning to live as a community.

ChaChaI was an Anthropology major in college and was always fascinated with Primates. Although I never did any specialized study of Orangutans, I find them as equally compelling as Gorillas and Chimps. In fact, the other night while watching, one of the young males was trying to impress a female. He hung from a tree and made silly faces then would stand upright on the ground and fall straight back. I was literally laughing out loud! He reminded me so much of my own son. Each show demonstrates the “humanness” of these creatures and the uniqueness of their personalities and even their faces.

This series is definitely worth my time to learn, laugh, and to remind myself that humanity can often use some humility.

Hi Jordanna–
I’m so glad you are enjoying ‘Orangutan Island’! Have you been to the Orangutan Outreach website yet? I think you’ll really like it! We are a non-profit organization based in New York and our goal is to protect orangutans in the wild. The orangutans featured on the show are part of our project at Nyaru Menteng.
You can learn a lot more on our site: http://redapes.org

Take care, Rich
