Writing War!

Posted by Leslie on April 30th, 2008 | 3 Comments

Lisa Paitz Spindler and I have been friends since August 2000. We met at a writer’s conference and so it’s no wonder that writing is one of our main subjects of conversation, or perhaps the LACK OF our writing. There’s always an excuse why we haven’t gotten any new writing done, whether it be TV, family, tiredness, a full moon…whatever. BUT ENOUGH!

We have challenged each other to a Writing War! Each week we’ll post a goal for that week on Wednesday. The next week we’ll post our progess, put up a new goal, and then poke fun, errr…humiliate, um, gently encourage the slacker.

So, for the next seven days I commit to writing 10 pages or more on my new story.

To kick off this war, I bring you the first of my newly created writing-related LOLCats!

Carl’s Miracle

Posted by Leslie on April 28th, 2008 | No Comments

Ok, I’m not trying to get sappy here, but every now and then something happens that’s worth mentioning.

We have a variety of pets in the house. Most recently, a long-tailed lizard (Zoe) and three tree frogs. One of the frogs is called a “Dumpy Tree Frog” and the kids named him Carl. My daughter Abby likes to take both Zoe and Carl out to play with. But she’s always good about putting them back in their tank properly.

Yesterday morning she went to check on the tank, and couldn’t find Carl. He just wasn’t in there. The screen top was on there, so how could he have gotten out? Abby found him about an hour later - downstairs in the family room! She immediately started spraying him with water (he needs to be damp) but his legs were stretched out and stiff and it looked like he wasn’t breathing.

CarlonJumprope(Right - Carl swinging on a jump rope prior to his near-death experience.)

We all felt sad. No one knew how long he’d been out of the tank or how he’d gotten down to the other room. We decided to bury him in our yard. But as we waited for my son to get dressed, I thought I saw one of Carl’s eyes blink. But, no, he still wasn’t breathing. Then, a leg moved. Surely this was something post-mortem. I flipped him over onto his stomach and his eye blinked again.

Could it be? Immediately I raced back upstairs and put him in the small pool of water in the tank. His other eye opened. His legs bent. By the time we returned home later that day, he looked perfectly normal. Eventually, he moved out of the water and back under the log where he likes to hide.

One moment we thought we were burying him, the next minute he was rehydrating in his tank. Carl is alive! I guess little miracles do happen sometimes!

Over at Writers At Play

Betty Hanawa is talking about her new release “Turquiose Dreams” - where the idea came from, how she wrote it in 14 days, and the constant push and encouragement she had from her friends (namely me and Tawny Weber).

Also, Marlene Urso has a very thought-provoking topic on Perception. She talks about how she’s read the same book various times throughout her life and how she reacted differently each time and learned something new with each read. This perception has also helped her with contest judges, knowing if they are not regular historical readers, their slant on judging her historical entry might be different. Great topic!

{Edition XXV}

I love LOLCat (I Can Has Cheezburger)! Between the goofy things cats do and the witty sayings people come up with, I am often genuinely laughing out loud. I’ve chosen thirteen favorites, but there are MANY more which crack me up!

for Improper Nights! Available for purchase on May 9, 2008! Here’s a short excerpt to whet your appetite:

Once inside her bedroom, Black shut the door and yanked her tightly to him. He plundered her mouth, desire raw and wild on his tongue. His scent flooded her senses, spiking impropernightsawareness through her bloodstream.

She arched against his hard chest. A rigid arousal jabbed her stomach.

Lenora nipped at his lips, remembering the feel his solid flesh under her fingertips. He was velvety soft and yet unbending, like stone. She wanted to touch him again.

He shuddered and broke the kiss. “Lie on the bed.”

She obeyed and sprawled across her four poster bed. Black pulled off his coat and shirt.

Despite the gray shadows of the room, Lenora gasped at the magnificence before her.

She’d never seen a man so powerful, so well chiseled. William was handsome, but he was nothing like this man. Shadows of light danced along the muscled ridges of Black’s chest and abdomen. His skin glistened where the moonlight touched him as if it too were in awe of his grandeur. Her fingers itched to caress him, to glide along the hard angles.

Her breathing grew more shallow as he stepped toward her, his walk purposeful and sensual. With a deliberate slowness, he unfastened the row of buttons at her neck. Each flick of his wrist drew a whimper. Instead of lifting the shift over her head, he slipped it off her shoulders.

Happy Anniversary!
